This afternoon, we took advantage of the unusually warm weather to go for what will likely be our last paddle of the year. Varnum Pond is a beautiful pond in Wilton and Temple with a lightly developed shoreline. We put-in at the boat launch on the east side of the pond and circumnavigated it counterclockwise, stopping for a break at the dam. The pond is very quiet this time of year, and we enjoyed being the only boat on the water.

Jackson Mountain 10/21/2026
On this perfect late October day, we headed to Tumbledown Public Land for a loop hike over Jackson Mountain. Although it stands taller than its more popular neighbors, Jackson Mountain sees far less traffic, and, in my opinion, is one of the more underrated mountains in the area. We started at the Morgan Road Trailhead, and hiked downhill on the Little Jackson Connector Trail. After reaching the Brook Trailhead, we headed west on the Byron/Weld Road. After a road walk of a few miles, we turned onto the logging road following the Stockbridge Branch of the Swift River. Shortly before the bridge over the river, we turned onto the trail which follows the Stockbridge Branch along the north side of the mountains.

Blueberry Mountain 10/12/2026
Opting for a short local hike today, we headed over to Blueberry Mountain in Township 6 North of Weld. At 9:00, we were the first car in the parking lot. As we headed up, we were unsure whether or not we would be in the clouds when we reached the summit. The trail remains in pretty much the same condition that it has been for the last ten years, mostly clear and well marked, but somewhat eroded in steeper sections.

Wyman & Hall Mountains 10/1/2026
Today, we wanted to choose a good hike for the peak foliage, and we settled on Wyman and Hall Mountains in Andover North Surplus. Having previously hiked both mountains last summer from South Arm Road to the north, this time we opted for the more direct approach from East B Hill Road to the south.

Androscoggin River Paddling 9/9/2026
Today, we continued our exploration of the Androscoggin River Trail on the section of river in Jay between Riley Dam and Pine Island. We put-in our canoe at the Snoopy Site launch, so named after the Snoopy cartoon which used to be painted on a water tank at the launch. From the launch, we started by paddling downstream a short distance to Pine Island, before turning around and making our way upstream.

Black Mountain 9/4/2026
Although I've hiked over Black Mountain multiple times on my way to Rumford Whitecap, today was the first time that I hiked Black Mountain by itself, and the first time I had been to its western (highest) peak. We started from the ski area parking lot, and the trail was in excellent condition as we ascended.

Mosher Hill Falls & Walrath Woods 8/12/2026
Our short outing today brought us to two pieces of land which were recently conserved by the High Peaks Alliance, Mosher Hill Falls in Farmington and Walrath Woods in Strong.
Mosher Hill Falls has long been a popular destination for Farmington locals with a small informal network of trails. Since their acquisition of the property, the High Peaks Alliance has formalized the trail network, creating a short blue-blazed lollipop loop around the falls and gorge. They have also constructed two sturdy aluminum bridges across the stream. Although there wasn't much water going over the waterfall today, it was still a nice little walk to check out the newly improved trails!
